Beginning Wednesday September 8, 2010, if you run a red light in Fort Lauderdale, Florida you will face consequences. The cost is $158 for each violation. The City of Fort Lauderdale has decided to install cameras at 10 intersections.

Red-light cameras are not a money maker for the city of San Mateo but the county has potentially generated nearly $3.6 million in new revenue to support the increased workload caused by drivers challenging the citations, according to city officials. The dichotomy of opinions — which must mean some county jurisdiction must be making money, if not San Mateo — comes within the city’s formal response to a San Mateo County Civil Grand Jury report issued in June on the effectiveness of red-light traffic enforcement.

The city has given tentative approval to installing its own red-light cameras, joining other municipalities around the state trying to raise revenue while preventing accidents. Although officials haven’t decided exactly how many cameras will go up or which intersections will have cameras, there are 13 possible sites.
