Numbers Show Red Light Cams Are Working – KCAU
They’re controversial to some but a safety measure to others. They’re red light camera’s and they’re popping up everywhere. You may not like them, but they are doing their job.
Nearly 21,000 red light camera tickets have been issued by the Sioux City Police Department since the cameras went operational last July.
While the tickets drivers are getting are plentiful– are the amount of accidents in those intersections, going down?
Stop if you’re camera shy, the somewhat controversial red light camera’s in ten of Sioux City’s accident prone intersections appear to be doing their job.
”There were 69 accidents at those intersections the previous year from July to the end of June. Since we’ve put in the red light cams, we’ve only had 61. So, I know those number don’t seem huge, but it basically reflects a 9% reduction in accidents at those intersections.” Says Captain Lisa Claeys of the Sioux City Police Department.
9% is a little lower than what law enforcement officials had been hoping for, they say they are still encouraged.
“We really wanted that awareness to be out there, we wanted to see it reflected in the way people drive and that people start paying attention, not just at these intersections, but at every intersection. Its just going to be a safer community, that’s the hope.” Says Captain Claeys.
While drivers may be getting the picture, they’re still torn on how they feel about those cameras watching their every move.
“In some aspects, I think they do have the right to monitor because it slacks down on a lot of accident but, how many accidents are they causing?” Asks Keith Donley of Sioux City.
“I think it would make the public more aware and watch so that there are less accidents.” Says Maxine Delfs of Sioux City.
“I think it alleviates the constitutionality of it whether there’s a reduction in accidents or not when you take away people rights to confront and cross–examine their accusers.” Says Brian Vakulskas of Sioux City.
Whatever your opinion, prepare to say cheese if you cross the red line a little too late.
One of the main concerns about the photo enforced intersections– was that fender benders would increase due to people slamming on their breaks. Of the 61 accidents in the last year– only two rear–endings can be attributed to the cameras.
