Red Light Revolt!

MUSCATINE, Iowa -The Muscatine City Council is set to make the second of three votes that could ultimately result in the transfer of hundreds of thousands of dollars away from our community to an out of state corporation in the name of public safety. Red-light and/or traffic cameras are the most extreme measure communities generally employ to enforce traffic safety.

Des Plaines is moving ahead with installing automated red-light cameras despite Mayor Marty Moylan’s request that officials reconsider the program. Officials initially said the mounted traffic cameras would be placed at two accident-heavy intersections – Mount Prospect Road at Touhy Avenue, and River at Golf roads.

One suggestion would target motorists who run red lights.

Red-light cameras at a major intersection in Redwood City were installed to increase traffic safety, but the San Mateo County grand jury questioned their use, suggesting the devices only serve to increase revenue for the city. After conducting an investigation of camera effectiveness for a June report, the grand jury said the cameras located at the intersection of Whipple Avenue and Veterans Boulevard resulted in an average of 507 citations a month, bringing in potential revenue of $65,636 for the city. In a response to the jury’s findings Tuesday, Redwood City police Chief Louis Cobarruviaz wrote that the city has had difficulty attaining its portion of the fines from San Mateo County and that some of the citations may be reduced by the traffic court if appealed

HOUSTON – Mayor Annise Parker says it’s the public’s right but she plans to fight to keep red light cameras in Houston.

Drivers in Clive will have even more reason to take extra care when approaching some of the city’s busiest intersections beginning in early 2011. And if they choose not to be more careful, they’ll end up paying more for their mistakes. The City Council voted 4-1 Thursday night to add three more red-light cameras to monitor traffic along Hickman Road.

Red-light runners in Gulf Breeze beware: Soon, you could be back on camera. From 2006-09, cameras captured photos of more than 6,000 vehicles running a red light at Daniel Drive and U.S. 98.
