The red-light camera — is there any more-hated traffic control device? From California to Texas and points beyond, the debate about their use rages.

​Those sprays and shields marketed as red-light-camera blockers? They don’t work, according to a recent study that cited Los Angeles Police Department data. The LAPD tested both Photoblocker, which is sprayed on to a plate, and a convex license plate cover marketed as a red-light-camera buster.

Cook County Commissioner Timothy Schneider believes he has seized the initiative to turn back a red-light-camera program with the legal finding that the county can’t arbitrarily impose it on municipalities. County Board President Todd Stroger and Commissioner Joseph Mario Moreno, both Chicago Democrats, have pushed the program by insisting that the county could press the responsibility for maintaining an intersection on any municipality that rejected placing a red-light camera there. High maintenance costs would all but force local governments to accept the controversial cameras wherever the county wanted to place them

As if there weren’t already enough reasons for students to cast their ballots in the upcoming election, red-light camera foes now have the chance to vote against them, and supporters have a chance to defend the cameras.

But that’s not a deterrent for Lakeland officials who agreed to give $500,000 generated from the city’s red-light cameras to Florida Southern College. Lakeland city commissioners voted unanimously in June to approve spending $500,000 during the next five years to partially fund the $2,035,000 Frank Lloyd Wright Tourist and Education Center at Florida Southern.
